Synology: Products with Atom C2538 processor meet quality standard
Synology states in a statement that the Atom C2538 processors in various nas products function properly. According to the manufacturer, the chance of a problem is very small and does not lead to data loss or danger. The manufacturer gives products with the chip an extra year of warranty.
There will be no replacement program for the NAS systems with Atom C2538 processors. In the statement, Synology says that no abnormal amount of defects have been observed compared to products that have a different CPU.
Synology does acknowledge the existence of the problem and the manufacturer says that it has conducted in-depth research. From this, Synology concludes that the possibility of faster wear of the processor with prolonged and intensive use is rare and that the products meet the quality standard.
Synology uses the Atom C2538 processor in its DS415+, DS1515+, DS1815+, DS2415+, RS815(RP)+ and RS2416(RP)+. Synology gives those products an extra year of warranty, saying it as a “proof of trust” in the systems. In addition, the manufacturer has created the email address [email protected] for customers who have more questions.
In early February, several processors from the Intel Atom C2000 series were found to be experiencing problems. In an explanation of the quarterly figures, Intel reported problems with a product that would show ‘slightly higher failure rates’, The Register noted at the time. According to an Intel spokesperson, this involves faster than expected wear of a part when it is placed under load. Specifically, it concerns the lpc clock output, which can stop functioning causing the chip to fail, according to Intel documentation.
In addition to Synology, other manufacturers have also released network equipment with the defective Atom chips. Serve The Home has made a list that includes products from Cisco, Supermicro, Netgate, QCT, iXsystems and ASRock. Some manufacturers have created replacement programs.
