Synology makes entry-level NAS DS220j available – update
Synology has released the DS220j, a two-bay NAS aimed at the entry-level consumer market. The NAS must distinguish itself from its predecessor, the DS218j, with, among other things, a more powerful CPU.
Synology has put the specifications on its site and at the time of writing the NAS is available as a pre-order at online stores at the time of writing. The prices are between 174 and 210 euros. This makes the DS220j a bit more expensive than the DS218j, but this predecessor dates from 2017 and the price has fallen since then.
The CPU of the DS220j is the Realtek RTD1296, a 64bit quadcore that is also in the DS218 and DS218play, while the DS218j has to make do with a 32bit dualcore with a lower clock speed. There is also now support for DDR4 memory. Otherwise, the specifications are similar: both models have 512MB of ram and two drive bays and they run Synology DSM 6.2.
Update, Tuesday 11.45: Synology has announced that the DS220j has only been released in Taiwan for now and that more information about a European release will follow.
