Synology launches DS415play

Synology has launched the DS415play NAS. The successor to the DS414play has a dual-core Intel Atom CPU and would therefore have enough muscles to transcode HD video material.

The specifications of the DS415play were broadly already known; Synology already showed the NAS to the general public at the Computex trade show in June. The Intel Atom CPU is clocked at 1.6GHz. The CPU is assisted by 1GB DDR3 RAM. Four disks can be plugged into the NAS, good for a maximum supported storage capacity of 24TB when using 6TB disks. Synology has equipped the DS415play with three USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports. Furthermore, there is a gigabit Ethernet connection, but an esata connection is missing.

According to the manufacturer, the Atom CPU is sufficiently powerful to transcode several videos simultaneously. Transcoding material with 1080p resolutions should also not be a problem. Synology further claims maximum read and write speeds of 112MB/s and 101MB/s. The manufacturer does not reveal whether the DS415play has a DTS license, so that this audio format can be read. Some users of the DS414play complained about the lack of this capability.

The DS415play, which runs on DSM 5.0, is available immediately. Synology mentions a suggested retail price of 365 euros excluding VAT.
