Synology has announced two new systems in the DiskStation line. The DS1517+ and DS1817+ are the company’s first NAS systems to support M2 SSDs. In addition, Synology is announcing the DX517 expansion module for additional disk space.

The support for the m2 SSDs as cache is via the M2D17 PCI-e card. The card supports the m2 form factors 2280,2260 and 2242. The DS1517+ is a 5-bay system and the DS1817+ offers 8 bays. Both models feature an Intel Atom quad-core at 2.4GHz and both come in versions with 2GB and 8GB of ram, expandable up to 16GB.

By default, four 1Gbit/s network ports are available. If you want support for 10Gbit/s Ethernet, you should put an additional card in the PCI-e slot. In addition, expansion is possible via the DX517 module. Both systems equipped with DSM 6.1 can be equipped with two of these modules for a total of ten additional disk trays.

The DS1517+, DS1817+, M2D17 and DX517 are available immediately. The manufacturer does not give recommended retail prices, but the DS1517+ seems to be available for about 900 euros and the DS1817+ for about 1100 euros.

Update, Friday 13.30: The suggested retail prices are as follows:
