Synology further delays DSM 7.0 beta to Q3 2020
Synology has further delayed the beta version of its DiskStation Manager 7.0 operating system for NAS devices. The manufacturer does not want to release the preliminary version until the third quarter, because the software is then more representative of the end result.
Synology reports in its forum and in an email to users that DSM 7.0 is advanced and that most of the changes have been made ‘under the hood’. According to the company, the software is of sufficient quality for daily use, but the preview version will not be released for the time being. Synology postpones the beta until the third quarter, because then the operating system should give a better indication of what it will be like at the final release.
DSM 7.0 was announced in September last year and the beta was expected to be available by the end of 2019. That was already postponed in December to February 2020. At the beginning of January, the manufacturer put a page online where users could register for the beta, Synology said it was then making a selection of users. That is not happening for the time being.
DiskStation Manager gets a new interface and speed and management improvements in the 7.0 version. For example, the login time should be reduced from twelve to six seconds. The new version should also provide better advice about the best size of the SSD cache and there will be a Resource Monitor that should provide insight into any bottlenecks.
Synology says it is still working on new features including Synology Photos, Hybrid Share and others “unannounced but equally significant functionality.” According to the company, there are 6,500 users who have signed up for the DSM 7.0 Preview program.
