Swedish battery company NorthVolt claims to have rolled out the first battery cell designed, developed and produced entirely in Europe. NorthVolt has been making batteries for some time, but this is the first in a new factory.

That factory is located in the town of Skellefteå in northern Sweden, NorthVolt reports. It is a battery cell with a prism shape. The first battery cell marks the start of large-scale battery production in the city in northern Sweden, the company says. The company founder, Peter Carlsson, worked for NorthVolt at Tesla.

The factory will produce 60GWh of batteries per year, according to the company. NorthVolt already has contracts with car manufacturers to supply batteries. Cars from brands such as BMW, Scania, Volkswagen and Volvo will have to get a NorthVolt battery in the future.
