‘Surface Book 2 is almost impossible to repair yourself’
The iFixit teardown of the Microsoft Surface Book 2 with 13.5″ screen shows that the laptop is very difficult to repair. The SSD can be replaced, but only after a complex number of steps. The site gives the laptop a 1 in terms of repairability.
The score of 1 for the Surface Book 2 is slightly better than that of the Surface Laptop, which received a 0 on repairability, but that’s about it according to iFixit. The Surface Book 2’s screen is so glued to the tablet underneath that it takes a lot of heat and prying to get it loose.
Then twenty-five T4 Torx screws have to be loosened to be able to remove the motherboard, but even after this this turned out to be stopped by the glued cameras of the Surface Book 2. After pulling the necessary cables, the PM961 SSD from Samsung is finally available. to delete. The processor and working memory are soldered and therefore cannot be replaced yourself. The connection of the battery cells is located under the motherboard, making it difficult to disconnect the power for repair attempts.
The keyboard part is also difficult to open because the bottom plate is glued, with the added complication that the battery of this part is glued to that plate again. According to iFixit, it is a big challenge to remove the bottom plate without deforming it. Microsoft announced the Surface Book 2 in October. In addition to the 13.5″ variant, there will also be a 15″ model. It is not yet known whether the repairability of that version has improved.
