Unknown Worlds had already announced that it is working on an expansion for Subnautica. Now the studio announces that it has been christened Below Zero and is set in an arctic region of planet 4546B. Below Zero will be a standalone expansion.

The story in Subnautica: Below Zero is set after the events of the original game, in an icy region of the same planet: 4546B. Unknown Worlds cannot and does not want to say much more about it yet. The team wants to keep the gameplay largely the same, although managing the temperature of yourself and your bases will be a new element. Furthermore, the studio hopes to be able to have more dialogues spoken, something that indeed only happened sparsely in the original.

However, the team emphasizes that the expansion is far from complete and that many decisions have not yet been made. It is clear that the Below Zero will be a standalone expansion and can therefore be played without owning the original game. As with the original game, Unknown Worlds plans to make a playable version of the expansion available in early access via Steam. It is not yet known when it will be playable. There is also little image of the new game. The studio has only released some concept art.
