Dramatic Labs announces Star Trek: Resurgence at the Game Awards. The story game is made by a studio founded by former employees of the already closed and then restarted Telltale Games.

Star Trek: Resurgence is set in the year 2380, shortly after the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The game will be released in Spring 2022 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S and on PC via the Epic Games Store. Dramatic Labs emphasizes that the game is completely single player “without microtransactions, DLC or other revenue models.”

In the interactive, narrative game, players embody two characters, First Officer Jara Rydek and Engineering Crewperson Carter Diaz. Working aboard the USS Resolute, both characters gradually unravel a mystery about two alien civilizations on the brink of war. The first trailer also reveals the return of Leonard Nimoy’s iconic character Spock. The American actor died in 2015 from the effects of COPD.

The developer, Dramatic Labs, is made up of many former Telltale Games employees, not to be confused with AdHoc Studios, which are also ex-Telltale employees. Kevin Bruner has led the studio since its “secret” inception in early 2020. Bruner is a founder of Telltale Games and then CEO of the company. He takes on the same job at Dramatic Labs. Telltale’s lead writer and creative director, cinematic director and executive producer are also working on Star Trek: Resurgence.

Telltale Games has been in the news regularly in recent years, partly because of the firing of a large part of its staff. Less than a year later, the game studio behind narrative games such as The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Batman: The Telltale Series and The Wolf Among Us had to close its doors. Less than a year later, the rights of the studio were acquired by LCG Entertainment, after which Telltale was able to make a new start without many of its original developers.
