After January 31, 2019, streaming services such as Netflix will no longer work on the Nintendo Wii. Earlier, Nintendo announced on the same date that it would close its Wii Shop Channel, which is the software store of the twelve-year-old console.

Netflix has sent users an email stating that the streaming service will no longer work on Wii next year. The email states that this applies to all streaming services, which means that Hulu and Amazon Instant Video will no longer work.

The date mentioned coincides with the closing of the Wii Shop Channel. Last year, Nintendo announced that the Wii’s software store will close on January 31, 2019. At the time, however, the Japanese console manufacturer said nothing about ending support for streaming services.

The Nintendo Wii was released in 2006 and more than 100 million units of the console have been sold. There is no Netflix app available for the Nintendo Switch yet. It is unknown when it will come. A YouTube app did appear this week and the American streaming service Hulu has been available on the Switch since the end of last year.
