Steam will stop supporting Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 on January 1, 2024. As a result, after that date, the software will no longer work on those operating systems; games no longer start. The operating systems have not received security updates since January this year.

The gaming software will no longer work on the old Windows versions starting January next year, as newer Steam versions require “features and security updates” that are only in Windows 10 and above. In addition, the gaming service works with a Chrome version that no longer works on older Windows versions. Google ended Chrome’s Windows 7 and 8.1 support last month.

Users who want to continue using games or other apps purchased through Steam must according to Valve update to a newer version of Windows. Microsoft already stopped supporting Windows 7 security updates for individuals in 2020, although organizations could still receive updates for a fee until this year. Windows 8.1 received security updates until last January.
