Valve has announced that it will no longer support macOS version 10.10 and earlier on the game platform Steam. The company reports that support will end from January 1 next year.

Not only macOS version 10.10, aka Yosemite, will no longer be supported on Stream; the same applies to versions 10.7, 10.8 and 10.9. Valve reports that the Steam client will no longer work on these versions of macOS as of January 1. The company recommends that users use more recent versions of the operating system if they wish to continue using Steam and games purchased through the platform.

As an explanation for the discontinuation of support, Valve reports that Steam’s latest features rely on a built-in version of Google Chrome and that will no longer work on the mentioned macOS versions. Future versions of Steam will also require the security updates of macOS 10.11 or later to run.

For the remainder of this month, it will still be possible to run games from Steam if using a system running macOS 10.10 or an earlier version, but other functionalities will already be a bit more limited than usual. For example, the new chat functionality released in July no longer works.

Apple released macOS 10.10 in October 2014 and this version was replaced in September 2015 by version 10.11, or El Capitan. Valve therefore only supports macOS versions three years old or younger.
