Steam removes payment option for mods after storm of criticism
Valve has removed the payment option for game mod makers from the Steam Workshop. The payment option caused a storm of criticism and Valve says it has therefore decided to remove the function for the time being.
In a post, Valve stated that the implementation of a payment function for mods in the Steam Workshop section was an error of judgment. Steam users who paid for a mod will get their money back, the company promises. This mainly concerns users who have purchased mods in the Skyrim Workshop. Valve will also handle all complaints, the company promises.
Valve says it implemented the payment feature with the idea of giving mod developers more opportunities to monetize their creations. The company refers to examples such as Dota, Counter-Strike and DayZ. However, Valve says it underestimated that the payment function in the Steam Workshop would cause resistance among users.
After the introduction of the payment function in Steam, users started a petition almost immediately. Tens of thousands of Steam users signed it.
