Steam Input API is getting support for the PS5 controller
Steam has added PlayStation 5 controller support to the Steam Input API. Those who use the beta application of the Steam client for Windows can use the PlayStation 5 controller right away.
Valve announced this on the blog that it keeps track of Steam updates. A recent update to the API allows gamers to use the PlayStation 5 controller within Steam, which also includes support for the gyroscope, LEDs, trackpad and rumble functionality. The PlayStation 4 controller already worked with the Steam Input API.
According to Valve, no further changes are needed in games to support the PlayStation 5 controller. Those who already use the API therefore immediately have support for the hardware in their game. However, it is still a beta test, but support will come to all gamers once the test is completed.
Figures show that in some games on Steam, a majority of gamers use a controller. In games suitable for controllers, such as skateboard games, this percentage is even higher than 90 percent. In total, 21.6 percent of Steam gamers use a controller, which is twice as high as two years ago.
