Steam beta update lets players use Xbox controller in every game

Support for Xbox One and Xbox 360 controllers has been added in a new beta update to the Steam client. This allows players to use those controllers with any game as if they were a Steam controller.

The patch notes state that support extends to any generic Xinput controller and that the same mapping functions as for the Steam controller are available. The update also allows users to add profiles to different controllers, although there is no way for Steam to differentiate between different Xinput controllers yet.

Valve released a similar update to the DualShock 4 controller in mid-December, also introducing support for the gyroscope and touchpad. It’s unclear how long it will be before the beta feature becomes available in a stable release. It took about a month for the PS4 variant for the stable release to take place.
