Statcounter: Safari, not Edge, was the most popular desktop browser after Chrome in April

Microsoft Edge is no longer the second most popular desktop browser worldwide. In the past month, for the first time in a long time, that was Safari, which had slightly more market share than Edge. Chrome is still by far the most popular browser.

That appears from the figures from Statcounter, which tracks the relative number of browser users on the Internet on a monthly basis. There has been little change in that list for a long time: Chrome is by far the most popular browser with more than two-thirds of the market share and Edge has been in second place for years. For the first time in a long time, second and third places have now been reversed. In April, Edge had a market share of 10.95 percent. This now places the browser in the third place among the most used browsers. In second place is Safari, which is noticeably more popular at 11.89 percent. Safari can only be used on Mac and iOS devices and not on Windows and Linux systems, but these figures reflect desktop usage only.

Chrome is far at the top of the list with a market share of 66.22 percent. That percentage has been stable for months.

The only browser besides Safari that doesn’t run the Chromium engine on the list is Firefox. That only has a market share of 5.59 percent. The browser has been losing popularity for years. Opera is also just popular enough at 3.12 percent to be included as a separate browser in Statcounter, but all other browsers such as Brave are categorized as ‘Other’. That total number of alternative browsers amounts to just 2.24 percent.

Chrome is also the most popular browser on mobile devices. Safari follows with a market share of 27 percent, but that is because there are so many iPhones in circulation. Samsung’s browser is also relatively widely used on smartphones with a rating of 4.83.
