Starbreeze is giving away 5 million copies of Payday 2
Starbreeze is making 5 million copies of Payday 2 available for free through Steam. The promotion will run until all copies are sold or until the Ultimate Edition appears. This version contains all 144 updates that the game received from 2013.
Gamers who wish to be eligible for the free Payday 2 version simply click on the Install Now button in Steam and the game will be added to their library at no additional cost and with no time limit. Starbreeze does not indicate in the announcement how many copies have already been sold, but the promotion ends anyway when the Ultimate Edition appears.
The Ultimate Edition is a bundle of Payday 2 and all downloadable content released so far. The bundle was supposed to be released on June 8, but has been postponed. The Ultimate Edition will cost $45. It is not yet known what the price will be for an upgrade from the original version to the Ultimate Edition. Starbreeze reports in its faq that existing dlc before the release of the Ultimate Edition is no longer available. Upcoming DLC will be available for free. The Ethan and Hila Character Pack will continue to be available for a fee. The proceeds of that $4.99 package will go to the independent developers. Starbreeze studio Overkill claims to make no money from this. Payday 2 will also get a VR expansion this year.
