Starbreeze and Acer Collaborate on VR Headset Development
The Swedish Starbreeze will probably continue work on its StarVR headset in collaboration with Acer. The Taiwanese company is expected to be mainly engaged to produce the headsets.
In an official announcement, the two companies stated that they would like to collaborate in the areas of design, manufacture, promotion and sales of StarVR. Acer and Starbreeze have not officially partnered up yet; the two companies have hereby expressed their intention to collaborate and will now discuss the exact details of that partnership. Starbreeze’s virtual reality headset was first unveiled at the E3 trade show in 2015.
According to the official site, StarVR has two 5.5″ screens, each with a resolution of 2560 by 1440 pixels. The field of view would be 210 degrees horizontally and 130 degrees vertically. If the final product actually lives up to these specifications, they would be better than those of competitors like the Vive and Rift, both of which have a horizontal field of view of about 110 degrees and a resolution of 1080 by 1200 pixels per eye. These better specs are likely to come with a higher price and higher system requirements in due course.
Starbreeze also wants to show its virtual reality headset in a VR arcade hall in Los Angeles. In ‘StarCade VR’, players can get acquainted with the headset from Starbreeze and the Walking Dead game from development studio Overkill, which is due to hit the market next year for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows. It is not yet certain whether StarVR will actually be available to consumers, or whether it will remain with applications such as those in the StarCade VR.
