Lucasfilm and Disney have released the first teaser for Star Wars: Episode IX. The film will be directed by JJ Abrams, will be titled The Rise of Skywalker and will be a sequel to the previous film, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The teaser mainly features Rey in a desert landscape, being chased by a low-flying enemy plane. Short film images can also be seen in which the various characters pass by. The director of the new Star Wars film, JJ Abrams, said during the Star Wars Celebration in Chicago that Episode 9 does not follow directly on the events of The Last Jedi. The new film will hit theaters later this year.

The teaser shows that quite a few of the familiar faces from the two previous films are in The Rise of Skywalker, but also Billy Dee Williams, for example. He played Lando Calrissian in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi and returns with this character. Furthermore, Mark Hamill, the actor who played Luke Skywalker, will also be part of the new film in some form. The same goes for the late Carrie Fisher; of her images are used that were shot during The Force Awakens.

The Rise of Skywalker may be the last Star Wars movie to be seen in the next few years for now, as Disney CEO Bob Iger told The Hollywood Reporter last year that his company has flooded the market with the Star Wars franchise. and that fans should expect a slower pace in the future. Lucasfilm also previously decided not to release a Star Wars film about Boba Fett, which was reportedly in the works. For Star Wars fans, the series called The Mandalorian will also be released, which will probably be released on its own streaming service Disney +. In addition, there will be a second live action series that revolves around a character from the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
