Star Citizen’s Squadron 42 campaign postponed to 2017
Star Citizen’s single player campaign, Squadron 42, will no longer be released this year, but sometime in 2017. Developer Cloud Imperium Games announced this at CitizenCon. Only the basic technology would be mostly ready at this point.
At CitizenCon 2016, Cloud Imperium Games provided an update on Squadron 42, Star Citizen’s add-on that includes a single-player campaign and stars Gary Oldman, Mark Hamil and Gillian Anderson. There had been no update on the game for a long time, and rumors of a postponement surfaced in September, so the confirmation of the later release shouldn’t come as a surprise. The Squadron 42 site still lists 2016 as the year of introduction.
According to the developer, the basic technology is mostly ready, but there is still a lot of work to be done. Among other things, the software for pathfinding and combat, and the artificial intelligence for flights still need to be optimized. In addition, improvements are needed for object container streaming and CPU and GPU optimizations still need to be implemented.
According to CIG CEO Chris Roberts, one of the 28 chapters is currently being finalized and the result would be shown once it is completed, Kotaku UK writes. Roberts also showed a video of a procedurally generated planet and an update on the roadmap with versions 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 and 4.1 of the software, adding mining, repairs, farming and multi-galaxy travel among other things. .
