Square Enix wants to announce several blockchain games this year
Square Enix is working on several unannounced blockchain games, some of which it intends to announce this year. The company hopes that these games can provide growth, although the game maker acknowledges that there were many problems with blockchain last year.
Yosuke Matsuda, Chairman of the Board of Square Enix, says the company has several blockchain games in development. Part of it was already announced last year; the company wants to reveal more blockchain games this year. It has been clear for some time that the company believes in such blockchain games, but the new statements indicate that Matsuda wants to integrate blockchain broadly into Square Enix’ games.
In his New Year’s letter, the chairman of the board does not indicate what kind of games it concerns or how they should use the blockchain. Earlier he said that gamers could be compensated for in-game content they create. Matsuda also says he expects blockchain games to drive growth within the company and that Square Enix sees blockchain as the company’s most important long-term investment.
At the same time, he acknowledges that blockchain had a controversial year last year, referring to the volatile nft and cryptocurrency market, and the fraud surrounding the FTX cryptocurrency exchange. However, the Square Enix CEO thinks that these problems can actually be good for the blockchain market, if it leads to more rules and transparency. In this way, the blockchain market could grow in 2023, he thinks.
Square Enix is one of the most outspoken big game makers when it comes to blockchain games. Ubisoft and Stalker 2 creator GSC Game World also tried this before, but Ubisoft’s project was barely successful and GSC scrapped the plans after criticism from players.
