Square Enix opens studio for free-to-play smartphone games including Tomb Raider
Square Enix has opened a game studio in London to create free-to-play smartphone games. The studio is working on two games: Tomb Raider Reloaded and an Avatar: The Last Airbender game. The Tomb Raider game was already announced last year.
The Square Enix London Mobile studio is still looking for developers to make the two titles “and other games yet to be announced”. It is not clear how many people will have to work at the game studio. Because the studio still has vacancies, the developers are teaming up with Canadian studio Navigator Games for the Avatar game.
That Avatar game has no name yet and is based on the Nickelodeon animated series of the same name. Few details are given about this game; for example, it is not clear what kind of game it is and when it should appear.
For the Tomb Raider game, the London studio is collaborating with Crystal Dynamics. This game should “contain classic elements from the original Tomb Raider trilogy.” In the game, gamers take on the role of Lara Croft and must solve puzzles, escape traps and collect relics. This game will be released next year for iOS and Android. Last November, Square Enix already showed a teaser trailer of Tomb Raider Reloaded. At the time, the mobile game was still planned for 2021.
