Square Enix Cancels Final Fantasy XV Expansions After Producer Leaves
There will be far fewer expansions for Final Fantasy XV than planned. Instead of four DLCs about the characters Ardyn, Aranea, Lunafreya and Noctis, only the first one will be released. That’s because producer Hajime Tabata is leaving the company.
Square Enix announced the news in a live stream titled “Special Event.” The stream was intended to provide information about the upcoming expansions of Final Fantasy XV, but against expectations, producer Hajime Tabata also announced his departure on the broadcast and it was announced that three DLCs will be scrapped.
Tabata says in the stream that he has found a new project and that he is going to start his own company to achieve ‘his goals’. Square Enix does not provide further details about the departure of the producer. The publisher does announce that the expansions with characters Aranea, Lunafreya and Noctis in the lead role will no longer be made. The publisher does not provide any further explanation about this either.
Square Enix had appointed Tabata in August as CEO of a new studio: Luminous Productions. The producer of Final Fantasy XV was appointed in 2014 and Tabata is seen as one of the people responsible for the success of the game. Tabata has been out of work at Square Enix since October 31.
Although three expansions will be dropped, the episode about main character Ardyn will be released. That will happen in March 2019. The publisher shows a trailer of that expansion, which takes place before the story of Final Fantasy XV.
