Spotify will also ban political ads from 2020

Spotify will suspend the sale of political ads from early 2020. The company is doing this because it says it doesn’t have the capacity to monitor the ads. The measure only applies in the US, as it does not offer political advertisements in other countries.

Spotify confirmed the measure on Friday, including to The Verge. “At this time, we do not have the necessary resources in-house to thoroughly review this content, but as our capabilities develop, we will continue to consider this decision,” the company’s spokesperson said in a statement. The move also applies to the ads in Spotify’s own podcasts.

The Swedish music streaming giant does not say that itself, but in all likelihood the reason for the decision is the upcoming presidential election in the United States. On November 3, 2020, Americans will go to the polls.

Spotify is certainly not the first to point out that it is struggling with the problem of political ads. Twitter has completely cut that knot by banning all political ads. Google has decided that targeting political ads to certain properties is no longer allowed. However, Facebook has a less strict stance.
