Spotify removes Android widget from its app

Spotify has removed the widget for Android from its app. The Swedish music streaming service believes that it does not add enough besides the persistent notification in the notification drawer, where the same information and buttons can be found.

Users of the application are occasionally expressing dissatisfaction with the decision. They state that taking down the notification drawer is an extra action every time before they can access their music controls. A page has been set up on the Spotify Community website where users can voice their opinion about a possible return of the widget. For the time being, the status of that idea is: ‘not right now’.

It is striking that competitors Google Play Music, Apple Music, Tidal and Soundcloud all offer an Android widget in addition to notification controls to control their music. Spotify is the first and perhaps only to say goodbye to its Android widget.
