Spotify releases update to fix extreme write issue
Music service Spotify has released an update to its desktop programs on Windows, OS X/macOS, and Linux to fix a write operation issue. The application writes a lot of data to the storage during use, which can be problematic especially for SSDs.
Version 1.0.42 of the music service should solve the problem, says a moderator of the music company on its own forum in a topic on the subject. Users do not need to download the update themselves; Spotify automatically updates the program when users launch the app.
The problem has been going on since this summer. In addition, Spotify provides gigabytes of writes per hour when using the desktop software. This can be especially problematic for the lifespan of SSDs. In the topic, several users say that they have had problems with their storage because of the problem.
It remains unknown what caused the problem and how Spotify solved it. It is also unclear whether this affected all users. The music streaming service currently has around 40 million paying users.
