Spotify now has twenty million active users, of which five million pay 5 or 10 euros a month to the Swedish music streaming service. Spotify announced this during a press conference on Thursday, during which new functionality was also announced.

The news that Spotify has five million paying users comes less than a year after Spotify announced it has three million paying subscribers. Of the five million subscribers, about one million are in the United States. The Next Web also knows how to report that there are now 20 million active users and that together they have created a billion playlists.

During the press conference on Thursday, the Swedish music streaming service also announced that so far $ 500 million has been paid out to the copyright holders. Half of this has been paid out in the past nine months.

Spotify also announced new functionality. There will be a ‘Discover’ tab that will allow people to discover new music, similar to the tab of the same name in Twitter. In addition, people will soon be able to ‘follow’ other users, so that they will be kept informed of music that influential users are listening to. There will also be a tab where music is neatly sorted by artist, the ‘Collection’ tab.
