Spotify organizes its own award show in March 2020
Spotify is going to organize its own Award Show for the first time. The event, called the Spotify Awards, will take place in March 2020 in Mexico and, according to the music streaming service, is a “true reflection of what fans are listening to.”
Spotify Awards
The show is entirely based on user data. Which artists, albums or songs will win prizes depends on the number of worldwide streams. “Your listening habits and patterns determine the categories, finalists and winners of the awards,” the company explains in a statement on its website.
According to Spotify, it is a show that really catches on to what appeals to people. For example, the company itself does not determine which genres compete for the prizes or not. That too is entirely based on user data.
Streaming capital of the world
The event will take place next year on March 5 in Mexico City. As an explanation for the choice of this location, Spotify says that Mexico City is the ‘streaming capital of the world’. “The capital of Mexico has the most Spotify listeners worldwide, more than New York City, London or Paris.” The show is broadcast live throughout Latin America. The promotional video of the event is also entirely in Spanish.
It is not clear what the award ceremony will look like and whether artists will perform.
