Spotify is considering acquiring podcast maker The Ringer
Spotify would consider expanding its podcast offerings by acquiring The Ringer. The Ringer is a maker of sports and tech podcasts, among other things, and is particularly popular in the United States.
The plans have not been publicly disclosed by Spotify, but sources from the usually well-informed The Wall Street Journal confirmed that talks are underway with The Ringer for a takeover. It is not clear what amount, if any, would be involved; the talks are said to be still at an early stage. The podcast maker has annual sales of approximately $15 million.
The Ringer offers 30 podcasts. In the event of a possible acquisition, these will probably be integrated into Spotify. Currently, The Ringer’s podcasts are downloaded about 100 million times a month.
Spotify has been expanding its podcast offerings for some time now, so the acquisition of The Ringer shouldn’t come as a surprise. Last year, Spotify already acquired two podcast companies, and recommendations and advertisements came in exclusive podcasts.
