Spotify investigates high battery consumption of its app on iPhones
Spotify acknowledges that its iPhone app’s battery consumption is excessive on iOS 15 and iOS 14.8. The company says it is investigating the problem. Spotify does not yet indicate when users can expect an update.
Users report in various Reddit threads and Twitter–messages that their device’s battery drains much faster than normal when using Spotify, 9to5Mac noted. Users report that this has been happening since the release of the most recent iOS versions, specifically with iOS 14.8 and 15. The high battery consumption would also occur when the app is running in the background.
Reinstalling the app doesn’t seem to work, users report. People also write that their phones get hot when using the Spotify app. “Spotify’s battery consumption has risen sharply over the past few days,” writes one Reddit user. “A workout that used to use 10 to 15 percent of my battery now costs 40 to 60 percent and my battery gets hot when the app is open.”
Spotify has since acknowledged the issue on its community website. “We have passed your information on to the relevant team and we can confirm that they are currently looking into it,” the company said. The service says it will provide more information as soon as more is known about the cause of the problem.
The streaming service advises users to keep their Spotify app up to date. IOS users can also disable ‘background app refresh’ in the meantime. This feature allows apps to refresh themselves while they are not actively being used. The option is in the iPhone settings under ‘general’. However, some Reddit users report that the issue also occurs when background app refresh is disabled.
