Indie game Spelunky 2 will be released on PS4 on September 15th. The game will be released on Steam ‘shortly afterwards’. That reports developer Mossmouth. The game is getting several new features, including an online multiplayer mode.

Mossmouth announced the release date during Sony’s State of Play presentation. The game was announced in 2017, but developer Mossmouth has revealed little about the game since then. In 2018, the developer reported that the game would be released in 2019, but this was later delayed.

Now the developer is reporting that the game will be released for PS4 on September 15. Mossmouth late on Twitter know that the Steam version of Spelunky 2 will be released ‘shortly’ after the PS4 variant. This is because the developer needs extra time to improve the online multiplayer mode on the PC. After the game is out on Steam, Mossmouth is looking into the possibilities of releasing the game on other platforms.

Spelunky is a kind of 2D platforming game that revolves around exploring tunnels and caves. The first game came out for PC in 2008 and has since been re-released across platforms. Spelunky 2 follows about the same formula as its predecessor, but gets several new features. For example, the upcoming game will have an online multiplayer mode, with which players can jointly explore the in-game tunnels. The previous game only supported local co-op.

In Spelunky 2, players can also build an ‘in-game community’ by discovering new characters. Furthermore, the game will receive several new objects and other functions. The store system, which was prominent in the first game, is also being revamped.
