Speedrunning marathon raises 2 million euros for charities
Speedrunningmarathon Awesome Games Done Quick has raised more than 2 million euros in donations for a charity that helps fight cancer. The event lasted eight days and covered more than 150 games and even more players.
The last game of AGDQ was played on Sunday. That was Undertale and it was played by TGH, who had to reach the pacifist end of the game. He did this in 1 hour and 28 minutes. This edition of Awesome Games Done Quick featured games like Super Mario Galaxy 2, Dark Souls 3, Hyper Light Drifter as well as older games like Super Mario Bros, System Shock 2, Jazz Jackrabbit and many more.
The collected money amount goes to the American Prevent Cancer Foundation. The amount is the highest that AGDQ has raised in its seven years of existence. In those years, it has now raised almost ten million euros in total.
The event has ended several hours at the time of writing. However, making donations is still possible. The marathon was broadcast as a Twitch stream and can then also be found on YouTube. The edited runs can’t be found yet, but the lion’s share of the unedited streams are already in a playlist. The various uploads are also tracked on Reddit, but a little more clearly.
In speedrunning, gamers set themselves the goal of completing a game as quickly as possible. Certain conditions are often attached to this to make the challenge as interesting as possible for both the player and the viewer. For example, the player may be required to complete the game for 100% or to race to the end as quickly as possible, regardless of how much content he skips. There can also be varied in difficulty, the use of exploits and which in-game tools the player can use. For example, experienced speedrunners can complete games that normally take tens of hours of playing time with enough practice within an hour.
