Spanish manufacturer to present Ubuntu tablet with convergence next month

The Spanish bq has announced to show an Ubuntu tablet with convergence at the Mobile World Congress 2016 in Barcelona. In addition, the company shows a new smartphone, the Aquaris X5 Plus, which runs on Cyanogen.

Convergence is Canonicals Ubuntu’s system for using a tablet or smartphone as a full-fledged PC along with a keyboard, external monitor and mouse. The Ubuntu tablet with convergence is a bq Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Edition. This confirms the rumors that have been circulating before. The tablet has a screen diagonal of 10 “and a 64-bit MediaTek MT8163 processor with 2GB ram and 16GB flash memory.

The tablet is expected to go on sale at the end of April, after Ubuntu 16.04 ‘Xenial Xerus’ comes out on April 21. During the demo at the fair, the tablet will probably still run on an Alpha 2-based version, since the Beta 1 freeze is on Monday, February 25.

Nothing further is known about the Aquaris X5 Plus, except that it will be announced on Monday morning, February 22. Perhaps it will be a high-end version of the Aquaris X5, with better hardware. The current Aquaris X5 has a 5” screen with a resolution of 720×1280 pixels, has a battery of 2900mAh and measures 70.5×144.4×7.5mm. Furthermore, the X5 has a Snapdragon 412 on board, 2GB ram and 16GB flash memory. X5 is both an Android 5.1 version and a Cyanogen 12.1 version available for 229.90 euros.
