The new South Park game being developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Ubisoft will not use Uplay. The game will be available for purchase on Steam and physical Windows copies will ship with a Steam key.

The news emerges from a tweet from Obsidian and leads to a lot of positive reactions on Twitter, forums and news sites. In addition, the game is fully integrated with Steam, the developers also let know. This means that updates and achievements for the game will be processed via Steam.

Ubisoft’s Uplay is the digital distribution platform that the publisher aims to compete with EA’s Valves Steam and Origin. However, many gamers see it as unnecessary, especially in situations where Uplay games were originally purchased on Steam. The player must then first start Steam and then start via Steam Uplay, after which the desired game will eventually start. This isn’t the first time that Ubisoft hasn’t required Uplay integration, but usually only lower-budget games like Call of Juarez: Gunslinger are excluded.

South Park: The Stick of Truth is being developed by the studio behind Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, Neverwinter Nights 2, and Fallout: New Vegas, among others. However, the voices and script just come from the two men behind South Park, namely Matt Stone and Trey Parker. The game will be released in Europe on March 7 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, as well as for Windows.
