South Korean site: waterproof LG G6 won’t get removable battery or modules

The successor to the LG G5 gets a water-resistant design and supports wireless charging, but does not have a removable battery or modules. That claims the usually well-informed South Korean site ETNews based on its own sources.

LG would look for the G6 at the V34, a smaller water-resistant variant of the V20 that the manufacturer released in Japan. The G6, the tentative name for the successor to the G5, would use glue to make the housing waterproof, according to ETNews. This is the same method that Apple and Samsung, among others, use to make the housings of their smartphones water-resistant.

LG removes the removable battery through the step. The option to click on modules, such as that in the G5, would also disappear. The manufacturer promised several times to continue with modules for its smartphones, but did not say which new models would support the function. The next semi-modular smartphone with a removable bottom could also be a mid-range device.

The G6 would have built-in support for wireless charging. That feature has been snowed under in recent years, although Samsung has built it into its flagship phones. Apple’s iPhones are also rumored to receive wireless charging support next year.

LG has been releasing its G-series phones in the spring for several years in a row. It presented its G5 last year during the Mobile World Congress telecom fair. That will take place in Barcelona in mid-February next year.
