Although Garmin has not yet confirmed it, evidence is mounting that the company has been hit by a ransomware attack, in which the hackers have asked for a ransom. The it department within Garmin would have tried in vain to shut down the network.

Garmin itself speaks of a malfunction for the time being, but sources confirm to BleepingComputer that there is a ransomware attack, as previously suspected. Proof was also provided that it is the WastedLocker ransomware.

According to sources spoken to BleepingComputer, Garmin’s IT department discovered the attack when they turned on their computers on Thursday morning and tried to shut down as many systems as possible to prevent them from being infected. Employees’ computers were also shut down, although the IT department did not fully succeed, so the ransomware nevertheless took hold of Garmin’s network.

Shutting down systems has caused certain services like Garmin Connect to stop working, something users noticed on Thursday . Garmin already indicated that it was a malfunction, something that it still maintains today; the company has still not confirmed that it is facing a ransomware attack.

According to BleepingComputer, the hackers who reportedly started their attack in Taiwan want to receive $ 10 million to decrypt the locked files. It is still unclear who is behind the hack.
