It looks like Niantic is working on a major update for Pokémon Go. An analysis of the source code would show that more than a hundred new creatures are being introduced. Battles between players should also become possible.

This is reported by VentureBeat after an analysis of the source code by the people behind the Pokémon scanner PokeVS. Although developer Niantic has not disclosed anything itself, the code suggests that a major update for Pokémon Go will be released next month. Among other things, more than a hundred new Pokémon would make their appearance. Currently only creatures from the first generation can be captured in the game. After the update, it should also be possible to catch the legendary Pokémon Mew and Mewtwo.

Also, the source code betrays the arrival of battles between players, something that is not yet possible. Pokémon battles can only be done in gyms at the moment, something that Niantic has come in for a lot of criticism. Additionally, players should be given more options to raise their captive Pokémon, something VentureBeat describes as a Tamagotchi-esque feature.

Niantic has previously announced that it is possible that new generations of Pokémon will be introduced. Battles between players are also known to be considered by Niantic. However, a concrete release date of such an update has not yet been announced by the developer.

Pokémon Go was introduced last summer and quickly became wildly popular, which also caused inconvenience in some places due to the large numbers of people congregating in places with rare Pokémon. However, the number of players has since decreased, partly because many players saw no reason to continue playing due to a lack of features.
