Sony is coming with a new version of its RX100 compact camera. The seventh generation has a 24-200mm lens like its predecessor, but gets an improved 20-megapixel sensor and autofocus functions that were previously in the A9 and A6400 system cameras.

The Sony RX100 VII has a sensor of the 1″ format and it is a stacked cmos with dram on it so that the chip can be read very quickly. The maximum shooting speed is 20 frames per second and the electronic viewfinder has no blackouts. So the image doesn’t flicker when shooting at high speed. The camera also has a function to shoot at 90fps, but only for a fraction of a second. At that speed, 7 images are captured and then saved.

Autofocus works with 357 phase detection points and 425 contrast autofocus points on the sensor. Real-time Tracking and Real-time Eye AF are the autofocus functions that come from the more advanced cameras to the compact device. The device films in 4k resolution with a maximum of 30 fps and can also capture HDR images. In 1080p resolution, the frame rate is up to 120fps and there is a slow motion mode on the camera that works up to 1000fps at lower resolutions. Compared to the predecessor, the image stabilization has been improved, which works both digitally and optically during filming. Also new is a microphone input on the camera.

From August, the RX100 VII is for sale in the Benelux for a suggested retail price of 1,300 euros. This makes the price equal to that of its predecessor at launch. The RX100 VI will likely remain in the range, like previous models, at a lower price point.
