Sony is going to release fewer models in its smartphone line and there are also fewer TV models from the Japanese manufacturer. The cost savings should reduce Sony’s loss. The group will focus more on the PlayStation 4 and image sensors.

Sony is bringing back the range of smartphones and the group claims to have reduced the offer by 30 percent since 2012. However, Xperiablog has 14 different models for this year, the same number as 2012. “We are not focused on increasing market share, but on increasing revenue,” said Hiroki Totoki, the new chief executive of Sony’s mobile arm, according to Reuters during an investor event. Although the sale of the Xperia smartphones seems to be stabilizing, the smartphone branch is suffering a loss and Sony was forced to write off almost 1.3 billion euros on the mobile division at the end of October.

Sony now hopes to increase revenues from the entertainment division. The PlayStation consoles branch must bring in 1.6 trillion yen, or almost 11 billion euros, and personalized TV, video and music services should help with that. In addition, the camera sensor industry needs to grow significantly. According to Sony, the turnover increase can even reach 70 percent. A large number of smartphone manufacturers, including Apple, use Sony’s image sensors.
