Sony wants to release PlayStation 5 in 2021 at the earliest
Sony plans to release the PlayStation 5 in 2021 at the earliest. That says the director of the PlayStation division of the Japanese electronics company in an interview. Previously, it was rumored that Sony wanted to release the console in 2020.
Sony wants to wait at least three years to “prepare for the next step,” said Tsuyoshi Kodera in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, which is available via an archive site. “We’ll use the next three years to squat, so we can jump higher in the future.” Kodera does not provide further details about the specs or features of the upcoming console.
The CEO does say that the company is looking at how portability can come into the device. Sony released the PS Vita six years ago, but it doesn’t want to limit itself to a handheld-only device. “We need a broader perspective than that because so many things are now connected to the internet.” The Nintendo Switch released last year functions as a console at home, but can also be used as a handheld for on the go.
If the PS5 were to be released in 2021, it would be the longest gap between two generations of Sony consoles to date. There was seven years between the PS3 and PS4. The PS4 came out in 2013. Sony did release an interim upgrade with the PS4 Pro in 2016. Previously, it was rumored that Sony was aiming for a 2020 release for the PS5.
