Sony to discontinue repair service for Japanese PlayStation 2 users soon
Sony has informed Japanese PlayStation 2 users that the console repair service will be discontinued. This ends support for the Sony console released in 2000 after more than 18 years.
In June, Sony sent a message to Japanese PlayStation 2 owners, setting a deadline for a last-minute repair option. Users were required to submit a form by August 31 and return their console to a PlayStation Clinic center for a final repair by September 7, Japan’s IT Media reported.
The Sony PlayStation 2 was released in Japan in March 2000. It became a very successful console; Sony only stopped supplying it in Japan at the end of December 2012. In the thirteen years since its release, about 150 million units of the console have been shipped worldwide. In 2005, 100 million had already been sold. Currently, the total number of PlayStation 2 consoles delivered exceeds 155 million, making it still the best-selling console ever. The current PlayStation 4 has been shipped 82.2 million times.
