Sony suddenly withdraws PES 2019 from PlayStation Plus offer for July
Members of Sony’s PlayStation Plus subscription will receive the game Detroit: Become Human in July instead of PES 2019. Last week, Sony said that subscribers would get the football game, but that is no longer the case. It is unclear why the switch is taking place.
Sony has adjusted its blog post about the free PlayStation Plus games for July and crossed out all references to PES 2019. The game is still mentioned, but Sony says that players will not get the game anyway and that Detroit: Become Human will now replace it. The other game that members will receive in July, Horizon Chase Turbo, has not been modified.
The change is striking; Sony rarely makes changes to the lineup of its free subscriber games and it is rare for this to happen right after the announcement. Sony does not explain the switch and apologizes “for the inconvenience”. PES 2019 is a game from Konami and a disagreement may have arisen between Sony and the publisher about the agreements that have been made to give the game away.
Konami has said nothing about the disappearance of PES 2019 from the PlayStation Plus range. The Twitter accounts of Pro Evolution Soccer and Konami UK just like Sony sent out a message last week announcing that the football game would be available for free to subscribers. Those messages have not yet been deleted.
Detroit: Become Human, the game members now get instead of PES 2019, was created by Quantic Dreams. Until recently, that studio only made its games for Sony’s PlayStation consoles. At the beginning of this year, it was announced that after an investment from the Chinese NetEase, the studio will also make games for other platforms and release its existing games on PC.
