Sony sold most consoles in 2013 thanks to successful PS4
Sony is believed to have sold around 18.7 million consoles in fiscal 2013, more than any other console maker. The success is mainly due to the popular PlayStation 4, which has reportedly sold 7 million units until the end of March.
This is reported by the Japanese business newspaper Nikkei. Sony is said to have reached the top of the console sales list with 18.7 million sales in fiscal 2013, which ended at the end of March this year. Nintendo became number two on the list with 16.3 million units. Incidentally, both companies saw their sales fall in fiscal 2013: Sony sold 20 percent fewer consoles and Nintendo 31 percent, according to Nikkei sources.
Microsoft actually saw its console sales increase. In fiscal 2013, 16 percent more Xbox devices were sold. Incidentally, with a total of 11.6 million consoles sold, Microsoft is still some distance from Nintendo and Sony. Although specific sales figures are not known, Microsoft announced in April that it has shipped approximately 5 million Xbox One models.
Sony is said to owe the top spot on the console sales list primarily to the release of the PlayStation 4, which, like the Xbox One, came out in November. From release to the end of March, 7 million units have been sold, Sony said, contributing significantly to the total number of devices sold.
