Sony shows dynamic weather system and game modes of Gran Turismo 7
Sony has shown more than 30 minutes of footage of Gran Turismo 7 during its State of Play presentation. In it, the company shares details of the different game modes, support for DualSense functions and the game’s dynamic weather system.
The game’s menu is designed as a kind of map of a resort, according to the trailer. Through that card, users can access the various features and game modes of Gran Turismo 7. One of these is Gran Turismo Café. The developer calls this “the center of the map.”
In Café mode, users can unlock a menu of missions for certain cars. As players complete those missions, they learn more about that car’s history. According to Sony, the original designers of the cars will in some cases stop by the Gran Turismo Café. In total, the game gets 30 menu cards, which function as the primary single player campaign. In addition, Sony announces a Music Rally mode, in which players drive from checkpoint to checkpoint while music is played.
Furthermore, the game will have three different car dealers: one for used cars, a Brand Central and a Legendary Car Dealer. In Brand Central, players can purchase 300 different cars made since 2001. More rare cars are sold at the Legendary Car Dealer. In total, upon release, the game will feature over 400 cars and 34 tracks with over 90 different layouts. More cars and tracks will be added in future updates.
The ‘world map’, the Gran Turismo Café and the tuning menu
Gran Turismo 7 will have several custom tracks, in addition to several tracks that actually exist. The trailer shows, among other things, the Daytona International Speedway and the circuit of Spa-Francorchamps. As far as game modes are concerned, the license tests from the series continue to return. There are ‘mission tests’ for certain mechanics, such as drifting and drag racing. There is support for split screen multiplayer and there is a Sport online mode. The tuning system has also been improved, with more customization options.
The developer also discusses the dynamic weather system in Gran Turismo 7. The developer claims, among other things, that it simulates realistic celestial bodies, depending on the location of the circuit. Differences in air pressure should also affect slipstream and car performance. The track evolution and rain systems are also more realistic according to the studio. The game will have a built-in weather radar, on which players can see, for example, when it will rain approximately. Local showers can also fall on certain parts of a large circuit.
According to Sony, the DualSense controller can also pass on differences in the surface via haptics. That haptic feedback is adjusted based on vibrations in the drivetrain and engine, along with the resonance of the chassis. The resistance of the shoulder buttons is also dynamic. For example, the brake pedal provides more resistance than the accelerator pedal.
Gran Turismo 7 will be released on March 4 for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The racing game was initially planned for 2021, but was postponed early last year. The previous game in the franchise, Gran Turismo Sport, was released for PS4 in 2017.
