Sony sets up studio to film its own games

Sony starts its own production studio for the filming of Playstation games. The game publisher mainly wants to film its own exclusives, which can come out both as a series and for the silver screen.

That reports The Hollywood Reporter, which spoke with the directors of the studio. The production company will be called PlayStation Productions and will be headed by Asad Qizilbash and Shawn Layden. They don’t give any details about which titles will be filmed yet, but the new studio can at least draw on a large number of titles such as God of War, Tomb Raider, Metal Gear Solid and The Last of Us. The game series Uncharted is already being made into a movie. Director Shawn Levy left that project late last year; that baton was picked up at the beginning of this year by Dan Trachtenberg.

Sony says it will mainly focus on filming productions from its own catalog. “We have 25 years of game development experience, which is why we have great games, franchises and stories,” Layden says. “Now is the right time to look at other media such as streaming, film and television.” Sony indicates that it prefers to produce content itself rather than sell the copyright to other studios. According to Asad Qizilbash, each title is looked at whether it is more suitable for film or television.
