Sony has indicated through a spokesperson that it will solve the problems with installing Kodi on recent TVs. According to multiple users and the team behind Kodi, Sony blocked the ability for users to install Kodi on their Sony TVs.

A Sony spokesperson tells TorrentFreak that the manufacturer is working on a solution that will come with the next software update on TVs. Sony reports that a software problem has been discovered that causes the software to incorrectly regard Kodi as a ‘kernel object’.

Peter Frühberger of the team behind Kodi points out that changing the package ID is enough to fix the problem, suggesting that Sony specifically blocked Kodi. He also claims that if users create a new non-Kodi installation file with the same package ID as Kodi, exactly the same installation problems occur. He thinks Sony’s statement sounds very strange and says he doubts it’s true. “If it’s true, then their classifier is probably bad,” Frühberger said.

Kodi previously accused Sony of actively preventing users from installing Kodi on recent Sony TVs running Android TV. The Kodi team advised users to “buy something else that does work.” Sony then came up with an initial response in which the manufacturer indicated that it is not able to block apps such as Kodi and does not do so.

Update, 2:05 PM: Meanwhile, the team behind Kodi has confirmed that Sony’s statement is correct. The problem has to do with Sony’s classification algorithm, which incorrectly labels the ‘ko’ part of ‘Kodi’ as a ‘kernel object’. As a result, all applications with ‘ko’ in the name are accidentally blocked.
