PlayStation 5 owners can expect support for variable refresh rate starting this week. Sony publishes a list of games that will be patched and optimized for VRR.

Sony will start worldwide distribution of the firmware update this week bringing VRR support to the PlayStation 5. Variable refresh rate is a feature that is part of HDMI 2.1. If users have a TV or monitor that supports this in combination with a console or video card with VRR support, they can expect smooth game images without stuttering because the TV’s refresh rate can adapt to the frame rate. The Xbox Series X and S already support VRR.

Sony is releasing a list of 15 games that will be patched for VRR support in the coming weeks, including Call of Duty: Vanguard, DIRT 5 and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. According to the company, more titles will follow and upcoming games can be delivered directly with VRR support. Players can apply VRR to games that don’t officially support it, but Sony says results may vary and “unexpected visual effects” may be visible.
