Sony has officially released the previously tested update that gives the PlayStation 5 support for Discord. In addition, the update adds support for variable refresh rate for 1440p resolutions.

The current update means players can use voice chat via Discord to easily communicate with friends on other platforms. To do this, it is necessary to link the Discord and PlayStation Network accounts via the settings in the PlayStation 5. The Discord mobile app on a smartphone or PC is then required to actually start a conversation on the PS5.

In addition, the update brings support for variable refresh rate for 1440p resolutions. This is currently already supported on the PS5, but only at 4k and 1080p. According to Sony, an HDMI 2.1 screen is required to use it. Vrr is part of this HDMI standard and allows a screen to dynamically adjust its refresh rate to the output of the GPU. This prevents, for example, half-rendered frames and covers frame drops, as it were, so that there should no longer be any stuttering or screen tearing. The update also means that the DualSense controller can now be updated wirelessly.

Sony already released the beta version of the update for a limited group at the beginning of last month. This involved invited participants in the beta program from the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany and France. At that time it was not yet clear when exactly the final update would be released.
