Sony has announced the development of an extreme sports camera on its official blog. The POV camera gets an unspecified Exmor R-bsi-cmos image sensor and is equipped with SteadyShot digital image stabilization.

The extreme sports camera is equipped with an ‘ultra-wide angle’ Tessar lens from Carl Zeiss and can record video in full HD. The camera is also equipped with SteadyShot image stabilization. Sony has not yet released more detailed specifications on its blog.

The photos at Sony show that the company has kept it simple to operate. On the back of the camera, which has the shape of a hand soap, there is a large record button, with a ‘hold’ button below. On the side we see an LCD and two control buttons for it. There is a tripod thread at the bottom.

The body of the outdoor sports camera does not appear to be waterproof, but Sony plans to release impact-resistant and waterproof housings for the camera as well. The manufacturer is also developing mounting systems for the new wearable camcorder. Sony wants to fish in the lucrative market for extreme sports cameras with the new camera. This market is now dominated by the Hero cameras from manufacturer GoPro.
