Sony has announced three midrange smartphones ahead of its press conference at CES. The Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra will be released in March, the L2 will be in stores at the end of this month.
All three devices have a USB-C port on the bottom and a 3.5mm jack on the top. The XA2 devices run on Android 8.0 Oreo, the L2 comes with Android 7.1 Nougat.
The XA2 has a 5.2″ LCD with full HD resolution, compared to a 5.0″ screen with 720p resolution of its predecessor. Sony has also exchanged the MediaTek processor of the predecessor for a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630, an octacore with eight Cortex A53 processor cores and Adreno 508 GPU. Sony has added 3GB of memory, while the storage is 32GB.
Sony has put the camera from the Xperia Z5 series in the XA2. That is the IMX300, a 1/2.3 “sensor with 1.12 micron pixels. The manufacturer has placed an f/2.0 lens in front of it. At the front is a single eight-megapixel front camera. The battery has a capacity of 3300mAh.
The XA2 Ultra is a larger version of the XA2, with a dual front camera. One of the lenses offers a normal angle of view, while the other is a wide-angle lens. The primary sensor has a resolution of sixteen megapixels and has optical image stabilization, the wide-angle has eight megapixels. At the back is the same IMX300 as with the XA2. The battery has a capacity of 3580mAh.
The housings of both XA2 models are made of plastic. The fingerprint scanner is on the back. Previous Xperias have fingerprint scanners in the Power button on the side. The XA2 will be released in the Benelux for 349 euros, the XA2 Ultra should cost 429 euros.
In addition, Sony presents a successor for its cheapest device L1 under the name Xperia L2. It has a MediaTek processor at 1.5GHz with Mali 450MP2 GPU. The screen has a diagonal of 5″, at 720p resolution. The L2 has a battery with the same capacity as the XA2, namely 3300mAh. The L2 should cost 249 euros.
